SEO(Search Engine Optimization)

If we have a website with worthy contents, our website will climb to one among the top sites in search engines. But, it takes time something like six or seven months and sometimes even a year. People desperately wanted their website at the top rank in search engines and hence they opt to SEO (Search engine Optimization).

As, I mentioned above getting our website ranked in top will take time and so we use SEO techniques to help search engines find and crawl our websites with ease.
We need to apply SEO Techniques for each Search Engines specific. As we all know Google accounts for majority of Search around the world, we will try to stick with google search engine optimization techniques. It doesn’t mean other Search Engines should be left out. Unlike other Search Engines, Google is focused on the user specific contents. Search engines like yahoo and msn are marketing oriented. Those who are aware of yahoo directory services will know what I am talking about. We need to pay some amount of money to get our websites listed in yahoo directory, whereas google focuses more on contents specific, which is what, most of us wanted when we are searching something in the World Wide Web.

We are not going to talk about all those complicated SEO Techniques here. Instead we can Concentrate on very basic but must do SEO Techniques.

Before, we go into topic, I wish to mention one thing here. Whatever, we do to get our website ranked high in search engines, nothing  will favour us unless we got some meaningful contents in our website.

Steps:
As I said before, we will have google focused techniques here.

1) Submitting URL to google Search Engine.

We need to submit our website to google. But it doesn’t mean our website gets crawled and indexed in google’s database soon. It may take some months. But it reduces the time to great extend compared to not submitting the url at all to google. It is worth trying. Here is the link to submit the url to google.

2) Keyword Selection

We need to select keywords for our each pages in our websites. Use keywords in the meta tag increases the chances of crawling and indexing our webpages in google more easier. We can use google adwords to search for commonly used high rated keywords by surfers. Here is the link for keyword research with google adwords.

Type a keywords related to page content in your website in above link and you will get a  list of commonly used similar keywords which you can use in our webpages. This also increase the chances of your website to climb up in page rank with google.

3) Google webmaster tool

This part is more important. Google webmaster provides you all help you need to optimize your website for helping the google to better crawl your website. Most search engines at the time of crawling a website uses sitemap.xml file residing in the root directory / top level directory of website to know the number of pages residing in our websites and their path. Creating a sitemap.xml file is a very simple. We will discuss about it when I upload tutorials in XML in few weeks. But we can get a sitemap.xml file for our  websites from some websites easily. we just need to enter the url of our websites on the text box provided there and we will get a sitemap for our website in few seconds. We can download in xml or html formats. Download in xml format and upload to top level directory in the website and submit the same in google webmaster.

We need to register with our gmail username to access google webmaster.

4) Google Analytics
Registering our website with google analytics can really help us to know everything happening in our websites. It pin points numbers of visitors to our website everyday along with their location, what they are searching for in our website, how many pages they visited, how long they stayed in our website, what are they pages they viewed etc. Google analytics tools even tells us the browsers site visitors used while accessing our websites. This is a great tool and this helps us to know what your site visitors expect from us and helps us to optimize our websites to attract more visitors to our websites. 5) Submitting Website to Social Networking Sites.
Social Networking sites like facebook, twitter,orkut, youtube etc are attracting huge visitors these days and many users have huge friends list. Including our website links in our profile pages of social networking sites increase huge traffic to our website.

6) Linking to other websites.
We can link our WebPages to other websites, similarly we can also contact other website administrators for link exchange between two websites, but we have to make sure while providing links to other websites, that the contents of our website and linking websites are similar. For example we can provide links to other websites from our websites at the end of a topic say “for further reading”. Don’t just throw away links to all top ranking websites. Just make sure the issue you are dealing with is similar between two websites.
